With alarm, to engage the alarm function, a spring metal piece is allowed to move free with the 60 hertz current, when the cams of the gears are aligned, the spring bangs the transformer in the clock making an audible sound.

Made in the USA found in the North Carolina Mountains. Probably from the late 70’s early 80’s, Nylon gears, a neat clock!
